This Blog Isn’t Dead…

It’s just stuck in a place that is neither humorous.

Nor inspired.

Nor relevant.

Nor the least bit entertaining.

So, sorry for that.

Also, the database got corrupted. So, everything disappeared for a while.

That sucked.

If anyone out there is still checking in here, the best I can offer you is this ($20 Monster and Dragon hats that I am clearing out of my Etsy shop).

And I guess that’s about it. See you on the other side.

Two Exciting Things (and some other stuff too)

Exciting Thing (the first): The powers that be at Illustration Friday have chosen MY suggestion for this week’s topic! Wow. I could hardly believe it when I stumbled across it on Twitter Friday morning, but there it was!

I have to say, looking at the submissions has been a completely different experience this time around. When I chose the word to submit, I had a specific set of ideas in my head. Seeing how others are choosing to interpret the word (which, by the way, is ‘swell’) has been very interesting. Probably going to be hard to narrow down my Friday Favorites this week.

Since my blogiversary, I have been meaning to post my list of goals for this year. One of them was to submit a topic worthy of being chosen for IF. Mission accomplished! Now, it’s time to conquer the Mobbies (a.k.a. Maryland’s Outstanding Blogs). Heh, I wish.

As an added bonus, the hits on my blog have gone ballistic over the past three days! I’d better step up my game.

Exciting Thing (the second): A friend of mine recently decided to awaken her muse by taking a drawing class. One of her pieces will be featured in the student art show in October. She can invite only 8 people to the show’s opening and she chose ME to be one of them!

I’m so honored (and excited)!

Other stuff: I don’t know if it is the promise of a week of temps in the low/mid-80s or the fact that the stores are busting at the seams with school supplies right now, but I finally feel like I may be emerging from my summer slump. I have even considered digging out my knitting supplies and getting to work on some monster, dragon, and owl hats. I’ve noticed more knitted items showing up on Etsy these days, so it may be time for my cast of wooly headwear characters to make their seasonal appearance. What do you think? Is it time or would I be jumping the gun? Are you ready to think about winter hats?

Lastly, a note to anyone who may have just stumbled upon my humble blog this weekend – I’m usually not this boring. I promise. Stick around a while, you’ll see. Heh.

Random Randomness

So, I am finally caught up on my 365 postings and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I absolutely hate falling behind on things and I am so happy to be caught up on at least one thing in my life. My apologies to anyone whose RSS feeds were overrun with my photo posts. Heh.

Monster Hat Madness continues around here and, while I am secretly longing to return to my paints, I have to admit that I’m having fun designing hats. I just finished my first Owl Hat and I’m pretty happy with it. It looks like I’ll have the opportunity to make a few more soon and hopefully, it won’t be long before they show up in the Etsy shop (famous last words!).

I still feel like a stranger in a strange land there. I’m really trying to familiarize myself with the way things work and how other people manage their shops, but I’d really much rather spend my time designing and creating. If anyone out there has any words of wisdom or encouragement with regards to the confusing quagmire that is Etsy, please don’t hesitate to share!

Speaking of sharing, I mentioned previously that I have been working on some things to share with parents (or grandparents, or babysitters, or anyone else who dedicates time to entertaining/educating kiddos). Right now, two of Sir’s favorite things are ABCs and coloring. So, I’ve been making alphabet coloring pages for him. I am hoping that eventually I will find the time to tweak some of the designs and make my own little coloring books. For now, I’m willing to share some of them here on my blog. They will be in .pdf format making them easy to download and print. I am hoping to post the first one this week (on Thursday maybe – just in time for the weekend when it is easy to run out of fun kid activities).

And so it goes…

Rawr! (says the Monster Hat)

Update: Monster Hats and Dragon Hats are back in the shop after the summer hiatus! Find them here.

The Monster Hat has finally made it’s debut on Etsy. It took me for-freaking-ever to get these guys made, photographed, and listed in the shop, but I’m using the fact that I had a ton of custom orders to get through as my excuse for that. I still have some custom hats to make, but I am really trying to get more done for the shop whenever I have a free minute.

I have to say that I love the Monster Hat. I really had no idea how well they would go over when I started making them. I really just designed it because I knew that Sir would love to have a hat that looked like a monster and oddly, I couldn’t find a pattern for what I had in mind. I made three, one of which came out horribly and has been tossed into a box never to be heard from again, before I came up with THE design. I have since had to tweak the design to make various sizes (including adult sizes!). Now that I have the patterns down, I can whip them out fairly quickly, but they are still a bit labor intensive mostly due to the detail work involved.

I have to admit, I was getting a little bored of making the same hat over and over. That is how the Dragon Hat came to be. The Dragon Hat is fun and ferocious and uses the same basic design of the Monster Hat. I currently have one Dragon Hat available in the shop, with more on the way soon.

I am also working on a few other variations that I am very excited about. I just hope I can get them designed and made before winter is over!

I can do either hat in pretty much any color combination and size that one might need. I actually love doing custom hats, so if you know anyone who might want one (or ten), don’t hesitate to let me know!

Does Absence Make the Heart Grow Fonder?

Seriously, you tell me (if there’s even anyone out there reading this, that is). I am ashamed at how long I have been absent from this blog. I don’t really have any good excuse (except maybe that I was doing a lot of work on custom orders), but I do have a collection of fairly lame ones – recurring illness, family visits, birthday party hecticness (yes, I made that word up), and general slackassery (another made up word), just to name a few.

For anyone who may be wondering, my 365 project hasn’t fallen by the wayside entirely. I have still been taking photos daily (excluding those days when I was too weak to hold up my camera). I just haven’t had time or energy to post them. I plan to start working on catching up with posting ASAP. For the days that I have missed, I will fill in with photos from ‘the archives’. I cannot begin to express how disappointed I am in myself for missing days. I was looking forward to ending this project by saying, ‘I took a photo every single day for a whole year.’ Now, I can’t say that and, in my mind, that is the ultimate failure.

I also have some major catching up to do on my Etsy shop. I have been mass producing (in as much as one person can mass produce anything) Monster Hats and now Dragon Hats. They are standing by patiently awaiting the day when I have time to photograph them properly and put them in the shop. I had several custom orders that kept me very busy last month and I’m ordering a bunch of new colors this week, as my yarn stock is (amazingly) beginning to dwindle.

In the coming weeks, I hope to be able to catch up on recipes that I have been meaning to post as well. I am also working on a project that I hope to share with some of my fellow parents out there – more on that later.
