Sketchbook Project 2012 : Here’s to Not Screwing Up! (or something)

Friends, at 4 o’clock this morning, I made a momentous (and kind of scary) decision. Yours truly, the so-so photog, mediocre (at best) wannabe illustrator, and consummate wiseacre, will be participating in the Art House Co-op’s Sketchbook Project 2012.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. The what now? Go ahead and click the link or, barring that, read my very brief description.

The Sketchbook Project is a traveling exhibition of sketchbooks from artists all over the world. My completed sketchbook will travel to all of the North American tour locations before becoming part of the permanent collection at the Brooklyn Art Library. It will also be digitized for viewing online.

It took me countless hours of wondering, worrying, nail-biting and not sleeping to finally decide to do this. Then I started the whole neurotic process over again as I tried to choose one of the 40 available themes. At 4AM, when Sir woke us up to politely request ‘mo wadoo pease’ (which in English means ‘Parents, I fully expect you to get out of bed and fill my water cup…now!’) and I couldn’t get back to sleep, I groggily decided on ‘writing on the wall’.

My not-quite-coherent thought process involved something about entertaining witticisms (in the form of life lessons I have learned), corresponding illustrations, and being forced to finally learn how to do more hand-lettering. But, you know, we’ll play it by ear.

So, there you have it. Now comes the (even) hard(er) part – waiting for the sketchbook to arrive and figuring out what in the world to put in it. Ever the overachiever, I have already begun a preliminary list of the aforementioned witticisms. They seem pretty funny to me. I guess we’ll see what the rest of the continent thinks of them.

I hope to post frequent updates on my progress here. I’m still debating whether or not to scan and share each page as I finish it or keep some of it out of the public eye until the tour begins. Again, we’ll play it by ear.

I hope that at least a few of you will come along for the ride.

  1. Yes, yes, YES! I LOVE it! Oh, Miss Ruth, it’s a fab-u-lous idea! You really are SO very funny, I can’t imagine a more entertaining sketchbook than yours! As for your little snarky comment about you being mediocre, oh PUH-LEEEZE! You are the last person in the world that I would call mediocre. Honestly. Yes, I just rolled my eyes.
Anyhoo, I’m so excited for you, and I really think it’s going to be fun! I’ll be following your crazy ride, so please post at least a few of your pages!
    xoxoDeirdre 😉

  2. Deirdre, you stroke my ego so! I think YOU should do it too. Oh, please! Oh, please! Oh, please! I would love to see what cool things you come up with from your doo-dad and thingamajig collection! (and your awesome doodles, of course)

  3. Great idea! You know you’ve made the right decision! I know that feeling of agonising over something but once you’ve made that decision you can get on with doing the fab job you know you can. Good luck with it all!

  4. Ruth- We are very happy to hear you’ll be doing this project! We are contemplating participating as well :) I love the theme you have chosen as well. Keep us posted of the development and the process :)

  5. Oh, the pressure! The stress! Ruth, what are you going to draw?!@#$ Ok, go easy! The Sketchbook Project is supposed to be fun and not something making you crazy. Your nails and I dare say, sleep meter, would prefer that you enjoy the idea because there are plenty of other things in this world to make you crazy, but sketching shouldn’t be one of them. Ok, some words of experience, I participated in The Sketchbook Project 2010 and it was a great motivator. I’m not biting my nails to decide whether to do it again, I’m a seasoned veteran of, what we call in the biz, the SBP, and won’t even give the themes a glance…joking aside, not sure if I’ll do it again, but it’s fun. There is no screwing up and I can’t wait to see what you post. What was your theme? Life Lessons? And remember, the theme is a simple guide, direction, gentle nudge, and like life and its lessons, veer off all you want! There is no SBP police and we just want to see what you do even if it has nothing to do with your theme. We’re all watching. We’re all judging. And we’re all laughing…D’oooooh. You’ll do great.

  6. Thanks, everyone, for the words of encouragement! I may need a few more pep talks before this whole thing is over. Stay tuned…

Also, I totally think any of you who are considering joining the project should TOTALLY do it. If I can do it, you certainly can too!
